چکیده

We have used a Hartree-type electron-helium potential together with a density functional description of liquid 4He and 3He to study the explosion of electron bubbles submitted to a negative pressure. The critical pressure at which bubbles explode has been determined as a function of temperature. It has been found that this critical pressure is very close to the pressure at which liquid helium becomes globally unstable in the presence of electrons. It is shown that at high temperatures the capillary model overestimates the critical pressures. We have checked that a commonly used and rather simple electron-helium interaction yields results very similar to those obtained using the more accurate Hartree-type interaction. We have estimated that the crossover temperature for thermal to quantum nucleation of electron bubbles is very low, of the order of 6 mK for 4He.

Quantum cavitation in liquid helium.

Using a functional-integral approach, we have determined the temperature below which cavitation in liquid helium is driven by thermally assisted quantum tunneling. For both helium isotopes, we have obtained the crossover temperature in the whole range of allowed negative pressures. Our results are compatible with recent experimental results on He. 64.60.Qb, 64.60.My, 67.80.Gb Typeset using REVT...

We have investigated the quantum-to-thermal crossover temperature T for cavitation in liquid helium mixtures up to 5% He concentrations. With respect to the pure He case, T is sizeably reduced, to a value below 50 mK for He concentrations above 2%. As in pure He, the homogeneous cavitation pressure is systematically found close to the spinodal pressure. 64.60.Qb, 64.60.My, 67.60.-g, 67.80.Gb Ty...

Nucleation of Bubbles on Electrons in Liquid Helium

Cavitation in liquid helium has been studied for over forty years, beginning with the work of Misener and Hebert [1] and Beams [2]. The interest in helium stemmed from the expectation that because all other elements freeze at higher temperatures, liquid helium should have exceptionally high purity. It was expected that this would greatly reduce the chance of heterogeneous nucleation, and thus e...

Calculation of the Shape of S-State Electron Bubbles in Liquid Helium

We consider the shape of electron bubbles in liquid helium. Grinfeld and Kojima (Phys. Rev. Lett. 91, 105301, 2003) have shown that the in a certain pressure range the 2S electron bubble is unstable against small distortions with l = 3 and loses its spherical symmetry. We report more detailed calculations of this effect and also study the behavior of the 3S and 2P bubbles. PACS 67.40 · 77.22-d

On acoustic cavitation of slightly subcritical bubbles

The classical Blake threshold indicates the onset of quasistatic evolution leading to cavitation for gas bubbles in liquids. When the mean pressure in the liquid is reduced to a value below the vapor pressure, the Blake analysis identifies a critical radius which separates quasistatically stable bubbles from those which would cavitate. In this work, we analyze the cavitation threshold for radia...
